More things done
As our work was getting deeper and deeper, we have managed to create several things in our ORI building.
On the walls we put several boards that could be useful for other people that have just started their adventure on Erasmus in Ourense or for those who are only thinking about it. For instance, there are boards about Spanish course available for students from other countries, trips that ORI will probably offer, sports offer for students or a few tips about Ourense.
Other things we put into our facility was sofa (styled as an oldschool one – do you enjoy the texture?) with table and chairs around it. People can sit and rest here or wait to talk with some ORI superiors .
ORI must be fast and efficient. Therefore, it needed a computer with a connection to the internet. From now on it is possible and ORI can serve the best quality of services
Work in progress
We had got several assumptions of what we want to create to make ORI.
One of the important thing and also what is typical to international community are their national flags. We create several flags of different countries from which we met other erasmus students. So there is Brazil, Italia, France and others. The flags are moving in the wind!
To make our ORI more friendly and comfortable we’ve created the “roof garden”. The main idea was to create a place in the building where people can meet and talk. The “garden” contein sofas, some plants and fountain!

Inventory Management Tutorial
One of the most important things in Second Life is your inventory. Every object, script, texture, etc. is stored there. It’s important to manage this mess because it can take forever to load with too many items are collected. Here’s a simple how-to movie. Enjoy.
Galician’s Monuments In Second Life
I was looking for some interesting places in Second Life, and then i thought about city where i live now – Ourense. So i put in the search tool the name of city from Galicia, but the SF base found only two places. First was Caixa Nova and the second some other place that i didnt know. So i choose Caixa Nova space and teleport there. But i was suprised because it wasn’t only bank. I saw there the famous monuments from the Galicia f.e. Town Of Hercules (Torre De Hércules) or Cathedral from Santiago De Compostela.
So this things have inspired my imagination to make also some famous place from Ourense and put to the Second Life, like f.e. Xtravaganzza or Face (especially well-known for Erasmus students

Digital Companies In Second Life
After visiting some company islands in Second Life I can describe my observations. I’ve visited Toyota, Adidas and IBM islands and of course Novatierra. All of them were created very professionally and it’s clear that those companies are serious about having a virtual equivalent.
Companies use Second Life mainly as another advertising medium. It does not require a lot of money compare to other means of advertisement a company use. It’s also self relying. Once properly created it can be maintained almost effortless. Few companies (such as IBM) use Second Life as a help desk or client relationship tool. Some firms even decide to first their virtual products in a virtual reality before producing a final version.
A very active business sector in Second Life is adult entertaiment. Plenty of virtual sex agencies provide their services to broad market. Also trading clothes and scripts to avatars in a common practice. Normal companies are usually omitted by players unless something interesting (such us launching of new product) happens.
A company which decide to create a virtual presence in Second Life in my opinion doesn’t obtain a competitive advantage over other firms in the same sector. This virtual world is not very populated outside USA. Unless the company’s target market is equal to Second Life average player profile there’s no reason to start a “Second Company”. However a company which decide to present itself to SL can use this fact in normal advertising campaigns. It can say that it’s innovative, can encourage people to check their virtual products first. Another issue to consider is viral marketing.

Global Kids Island
Global Kids Island
Yeah! Back to the childhood!
I chose the Global Kids Island because i was wondering what kids and teenegers can do in Second Life. The adults can earn money, make some new objects but kids? So..
In 2006 Global Kids became the first nonprofit to develop a dedicated space for conducting programming in the virtual world of Teen Second Life (TSL). Within TSL, the organization has established Global Kids Island, which hosts interactive, experiential programs for teens from around the world.
The Island is reach with good games attract a community, which becomes a shared repository of knowledge and experience; the first visitors will be the most adventurous and leave information clearing the way for those who follow.
Many areas which kids love to explore, and some “profesors” to guide kids through the virtual world. In general: lot of fun, lot of parties and educating through the play!

Harvard Law School’s Austin Hall
Another place that we visited was the Second Life Harvard Law School island were principles of law are taught. After spending a bit of time there I can point out couple of interesting things about it.
There is some kind of replica of a courthouse located where the classes and demonstrations are. Proffessors started helding online courses about law as a part of an online learning system. First classes were held in 2006.
Apart from that, over the past couple of months in the exhibition hall seminars were conducted in the virtual world. Another interesting thing is that on the island there are statues with avatars that anyone can view and take its sample without any cost.
I must admit that it’s a place worth visiting, not only for law students. If you haven’t been there, visit it one day.

Bowling Green State University Virtual Campus
Last week I took a teleport to the Bowling Green State University Virtual Campus which is the one of top 20 educational places to visit in Second Life. After spending some time there I can tell that it was worth it.
This is really well designed and maintained island with a lot of interesting facilities and fabulous places. At the entrance you’re welcomed by a rotating logo of the school and some informational signs so you know where to go next.
What cought my attention the most was a vertical gallery which holds various students art pieces. You can sit on an elevator (or fly around) and get familiar with what those students are capable of. There’s also a place where you can equip yourself with free clothes, textures, scripts and other things made by BGSU students.
Overall it’s a very interesting place to visit and a great addition to the university infrastructure. This place is capable of streaming lectures, hosting music performances and multi user conferences. Be sure to visit it sometime.
